Now this was a movie that I was’t really interested in seeing at first. I was like: it’s just another teen romantic comedy and I’m in the point in my life where there are somethings that I just really can’t watch anymore. I don’t relate to them as I once did. Part of me is just too old for the crazy random stupid-ness of high school. Now having said that, I did watch this and I did rather enjoy it.
Now in my eyes this was just like any other teen drama, the only difference between the ones I grew up with and this one is that the main character is gay. He still goes through some of the confusion of first loves that anyone can go through. His character also unfortunately has to go through the struggle of people looking at him different after he was outed. That stuff sucks. Now in my experience, when I was in high school, we really didn’t care that someone was gay. Everyone just went about their business and didn’t treat those kids any different then anyone else. That’s just what I saw and experienced. That could be totally different for other people, in other schools, in other parts of the country or world.
Now the only thing that really irritated me was that kid who blackmailed him into trying to get his friend to like the blackmail-y. That shit is not cool at all. That crap is just awful for anyone to do, especially holding Simon’s sexuality against him. Honestly, in high school do people have time for that? I would hope not.
Another thing I really liked about the movie was the soundtrack. It had a lot of good songs on it that showed the type of things that kids are listening to now a days, and some of it I listen to as well. I also liked that Simon had a thing for Elliot Smith and The Beatles. It helps show him as a well rounded kid and the he doesn’t just listen to “the worst top 40.”
Overall I did really enjoy the movie and will definitely watch it again in the distant future.
